AutoFormat Filenames:

FileScan will allow you to preview AutoFormatting before saving changes. This way you can double-check what FileScan plans to do to your files before you commit the changes!

AutoFormat makes the following changes to your files:

Fixes capitalization. Makes all words 'proper case' which is lower case with first letter of each word capitalized.
Replaces all occurrences of the underbar character with the space character.
Strips all () [] {} parenthesis, and brackets from artist name and automatically inserts a hyphen between artist name and song title. FileScan will not remove parenthesis or brackets which occur in song title.

example:
  (new_order)_-_round_and_round (extended).mp3
becomes:
New Order - Round And Round (Extended).mp3
Evens out the spacing between words, and does not allow back-to-back space characters (double spacing) in filenames.
Pads all hyphens ('dash' character) with a single space on either side of every hyphen. does not allow back-to- back hyphens (--) and compresses hyphen-space-hyphen- space ( - - - ) or hyphen hyphen hyphen (---) etc... to a single padded hyphen. ( - )
Removes all trailing spaces, underbars and hyphens from filenames.
Strips all occurrences of the word 'The' at the beginning of an artist name. This will allow your artist names to alphabetise in the correct order, and also, will combine your entries for any given artist, as it is very often the case that within a single collection, half of the files for a particular artist may or may not have the leading 'the'... at any rate, as the program does not have the ability to detect a missing 'the' it does have the ability to detect a leading 'the' and eliminate it thus, making your collection naming more consistent all around.
Expands all & (ampersand) characters to the word 'And'. this fixes a lot of issues as the larger your collection grows the more you will notice that use of & by your potential sources is highly inconsistent. Here is an example of 6 files before and after autoformatting. It is very very common to see file lists in which the following occurs:

... top of list ...

(The_Mamas_&_The_Papas)_-_Monday Monday.mp3
(Mamas And The Papas) Word Of Love.mp3

... alphabetized under 'M' ...

mamas & the papas - creeque alley.mp3
Mamas_And_The_Papas_-_I_Saw_Her_Again -_.mp3

... alphabetized under 'T' ...

THE_MAMAS_&_THE_PAPAS-California_Dreamin'.mp3
The Mamas & The Papas ---- Dedicated To The One I Love.mp3

... rest of list ...

autoformat will automatically fix this situation so these 6 files
will alphabetize together and have a consistent look:

... alphabetized under 'M' ...

Mamas And The Papas - California Dreamin'.mp3
Mamas And The Papas - Creeque Alley.mp3
Mamas And The Papas - Dedicated To The One I Love.mp3
Mamas And The Papas - I Saw Her Again.mp3
Mamas And The Papas - Monday Monday.mp3
Mamas And The Papas - Word Of Love.mp3

... all at the touch of one button ! no options to set! thousands of files autoformatted in a matter of seconds!

Some of these changes may seem somewhat arbitrary, but the important thing is that when you have a huge list, and half of your files are formatted one way, and half the other, it's a huge mess to look at, and filenames don't alphabetize correctly when half have parens and half don't! when you are dealing with 1,000s of files its not so important what the specific format of the names are, just so long as they all have the same format! at any rate that's the philosophy behind what this tool does so its no coincidence, that's exactly what this tool does for you!
